A Fallout 76 character can't hold more than 40,000 caps. Before buying, spend as many caps as you can — at vendors, vending machines, on plans — so we can send you the most. Then enter how many caps you'll have left:

DESCRIPTION
Caps are the main currency of Fallout 76, spent at vendor bots and at other players' shops.
A single character can hold no more than 40,000 caps, and selling to in-game vendors pays out at most 1,400 caps a day, so filling the wallet on your own takes a long time. A full stock of caps lets you buy plans, mods, ammo and legendary gear from other players.
The order tops the wallet up to exactly the limit: at checkout you state how many caps the character will have left, and the difference up to 40,000 is sent over.
